Schedule - Fall term starts Sept 10, 2024
Tuesdays
- Beginner Class (White belts) 6:00pm - 7:00pm
(Registered Class)
- Intermediate/Advanced Class (Yellow-Black belts): 7:00-8:00pm (Registered Class)
- Competition Kata Class: 8:00pm - 9:00pm (Drop-in: Open to SMU club members and members of Karate Nova Scotia in good standing)
Thursdays
- Beginner Class (White belts): 6:00pm - 7:00pm (Registered Class)
- Intermediate/Advanced Class (Yellow-Black belts): 7:00-8:30pm (Registered Class)
All classes are held in the Homburg Centre Community Room.

Fees - Class Fees, Associations Dues, Equipment, and Events
Homburg Center Fees per 12 week term
- Students & SMUfit members: $65 (Must be 14+ years of age to register)
- Community Members: $110 (Must be 14+ years of age to register)
- Competition Kata class: Day Pass/Drop-in fee.
Association Dues
- Association dues: $50 per member per year
Uniforms and Equipment
- Uniforms (gis): $90 (taxes and shipping included) for beginner level gi and includes the uniform and a white belt. Students may purchase a gi outside of the club as long as it is an approved, white, karate uniform with no patches or decoration. A minimum 10 oz weight gi is recomended as anything lighter is prone to tearing. ** Please note: Uniforms are mandatory
- Tournament equipment if a member would like to compete in competition:
- Required equipment for kata: Red and Blue belts
- Required equipment for kumite:
- Sparring gloves (red and blue)
- Mouth Guard
- Body protector (respectively male and female design as applicable)
- Shin & Foot pads pads (red and blue)
- Groin guards for male.
- Clinic, tournament, testing costs are dependant on the event and are listed at the time the event is scheduled.
Class Descriptions
Beginner Class
The beginner class is for people who have never practiced karate before as well as for people just starting out in the Shotokan, but may have experience in other styles of karate. This class requires regsiration with the Homburg Centre.
Intermediate/Advanced Class
This class is for members who have completed the beginner class, or for those who have past experience in Shotokan karate and have permission to join directly into the intermediate/advanced class. This class requires regsiration with the Homburg Centre.
* New* Competition Kata Class
The SMU Karate Club is pleased to offer a new Competition Kata class starting this September 2024. This class is geared toward the karateka/athlete who wishes to advance their kata performance for either competition, or gradings. Those who wish to participate in this class should already know at least one full kata from their style of karate that they are comfortable working on to improve. The basic fundamentals of kata will be worked on in this class, including speed, power, stances, transitions, balance, timing and techniques. This class is geared towards improving kata.
This class is open to members of the SMU karate club and any member of Karate Nova Scotia in good standing. This is a drop-in class.
